Scholarship Program for the Lichen Symposium

The Grupo Ecuatoriano de Liquenología (GEL) is excited to announce our scholarship program to support Latin American students of lichenology attending the XII Latin American Botanical Congress to be held in Quito, Ecuador 21-28 October 2018

With the generous support of two anonymous donors we are offering two stipends to sponsor students attending our Lichenology Symposium (each stipend $1,000). Applications will be considered only for students who currently work on lichens in Latin America or early career professionals who graduated recently, in the past two years, with a research project in Latin American lichenology (bachelor, master, or PhD).

The successful applicant has to present his or her research during our Lichen Symposium at the XII Latin American Botanical Congress. This oral presentation will be 12 minute long, with three minutes questioning time.

The deadline to apply for these sholarships has been extended until April 30th, 2018 . A committee formed by the Grupo Ecuatoriano de Liquenología (GEL) will assess each application and reach a decision no later than April 30, 2018. The award will be formally announced during the symposium and the successful applicants will receive their scholarship, when they arrive in Quito.

Application Procedure:

The following documents must be submitted until March 31, 2018 (no more than 4 pages in total, in Word or PDF format, double spaced, 12pt Arial, 2.5 cm margins):

  1. Brief summary in Spanish, Portuguese, or English of the research focusing on Latin American lichenology (no more than 2 pages).
  2. Name, academic affiliation (address), title and abstract of an oral presentation of 15 minutes [12 + 3 minutes questions, 1 page; the title no longer than 20 words, the body of the abstract no more than 500 words; please also check-out the general instructions on abstract submissions at http://clb2018.org/envio-de-resumenes/ ]
  3. Short Curriculum Vitae (1 page)
  4. Two letters of recommendation.

Pan-American Scholars program XII Latin American Botanical Congress

Announcement

It is with pleasure that the Botanical Society of America (BSA) and the Latin American Botanical Society (ALB) announce the Pan-American Scholar program associated with the XII Latin American Botanical Congress to be held in Quito, Ecuador 21-28 October 2018.  Four awards will be made to participants ($1,500 each) who will be called ‘ Pan-American Scholars’ .  Applicants eligible to apply must be members of the BSA (Two awards) or ALB (Two awards) and early career professionals and faculty members who have received their PhD within 5 years.  Awardees will be required use the award funds to attend the XII Latin American Botanical Congress where they will present a 20-minute talk at a mixer / mini-symposium jointly sponsored by the BSA and ALB.  Completed applications will be must be received by 31 March 2018 and all applications will be analyzed by a joint committee of the two societies and awardees will be informed by 30 April 2018.  Awardees will be formally announced at the annual Botanical Society of America conference in July 2018.

Applicant Process — Submit the following by email in a single *.PDF file:

  1. A short description in English, Spanish or Portuguese (not more than 2 pages double spaced, 12 point font and one inch margins) of your research program stating how your research relates to the Latin American / New World Flora and the  mission of the XII Latin American Botanical Congress ( http://www.clb.org)
  2. An abstract of a 20-minute presentation that you would present at the BSA / ALB mixer and mini-symposium at the Congress.
  3. A short 2-page CV.
  4. Have submitted two short recommendation letters supporting your application.
