On October 27 ^th and 28 ^th you can be part of the botanical excursion to the communities in the province of Cotopaxi, a province that is 2,950 meters high.

The trip will start leaving from Quito to the community of Quinticusig, in the canton Sigchos. The objective is to interact with the indigenous communities of the province of Cotopaxi in their cultural and productive activities related to the use of flora and biodiversity in general as a contribution to community tourism in the areas.

One of the thematic excursions of the XII Latin American Botanical Congress will be to the lagoon of La Mica in the Antisana Ecological Reserve.

Among the activities that will take place as part of the XII Latin American Botanical Congress is a trip to the Andean Northwest of Ecuador.

The trip will be by: Ceja de Montaña and the cloud forest. These ecosystems are from 1,850 meters above sea level.

The trip will start in Quito by passing through the Botanical Garden towards the west of the city through cloud forests, high mountains but also Andean forests and then through low mountains. You will visit the Pahuma Botanical Garden, the Cotinga Reserve, the Bellavista Private Reserve and Tandayapa. We will continue the journey to Mindo which is known for its endemic orchids. Some are small and difficult to detect.

One of the most exciting botanical excursions will be to the Petrified Forest of Puyango, in the south – west mountain range of Ecuador. For five days and four nights, you will experience nature in this region of the country.

We will walk through the Andean forest at 1,800 meters above sea level, where you will see outstanding plants such as Magnolia zamorana (Magnoliaceae) and Alzatea verticillata (Alzateaceae). You will travel by motor canoe to the Nangaritza River canyon at 900 meters above sea level where you will then walk to the Andean Tepui forest of the Orchid Conservation Area. Here, you will observe plants such as Magnolia bankardiorum (Magnoliaceae) and Humiria balsamífera (Humiriaceae). Later, you will walk towards the orchids conservation area on the crest of the Andean Tepui.

Among the activities that will take place as part of the XII Latin American Botanical Congress, is the Sierra Sur, Province of Azuay and Morona Santiago botanical excursion. We will visit ecosystems that range from 2,560 to 4,500 meters above sea level. These elevations correspond to three ecosystems: páramo and high Andean forest, dry inter-Andean scrub and humid montane scrub and  the cloud forest and humid piedmont forest.

The excursion will start by flying from Quito to the province of Azuay. Once there, you will be able to go hiking in the PNC, take long walks in order to learn about different plant communities associated with páramo and subpáramo, travel by vehicle and take short walks to see landscapes with remnants of humid mountain scrub vegetation and dry scrub, guided tours of the main species of cloudy and piedmont forest, a tour of Cuenca. This tour also consists of  a visit to the Pumapungo museum and the ethnobotanical garden and orchid from the University of Cuenca.

One of the most important activities of the XII Latin American Botanical Congress will be the central-eastern highlands excursion. There, we will be able to observe ecosystems ranging from 2,850 to 4,000 meters above sea level. At an altitude of 1800 meters above sea level, we can observe ecosystems such as páramos, cloud forests and rainforests.

The departure will be from Quito by land transport, to the province of Tena and Tungurahua. The route will be east of the Eastern Cordillera, passing through Polylepis forests until reaching 4000 meters above sea level. We will continue towards Papallacta, the Tena, through the Lower Montane Pie area, Antisana Reserve areas and Cayambe Coca Ecological Reserve. We will arrive at the Jatun Sacha Biological Station, continuing our journey to Baños de Agua Santa, where we will observe the unique landscapes of high jungle and waterfalls. Later we will go to the Llanganates National Park area ending with a visit to the Salasacas community to observe its market and crafts.

During this excursion, we will visit the Guajalito cloud forest, Sierra Norte, and Alto Chocó. These ecosystems range from 1,800 to 4,463 meters above sea level, which corresponds to the Atacazo – Guajalito páramo (cloud forest).

The trip will leave from Quito headed towards the Páramo del Atacazo, Ceja Andina, and western cloud forest. We will observe representative species with varying degrees of threat. We will also walk through the trails of Guajalito to view the representative species of the region.
